My Top 5 Must Have Cooking Spices At All Times
Spices are a must in my cupboard ;)! I use tons of spices in the majority of my recipes. 🙂 I believe that using spices in your dishes will add an abundant aroma, and a special distinct taste to your dishes beyond the usual salt and pepper. There are literally hundreds of spices out there, but you can simply start with the basics.
Here are My Top 5 Must Have Spices for your pantry:
The distinct flavor and aroma of cumin makes it a powerful spice to keep in your pantry. It’s earthy, nutty and it has a little hint of citrus. A pinch of ground cumin is enough to make a dish exotic but not too overpowering. Use ground cumin in your favorite Tex-Mex, Latin American, Mexican, African, and Asian dishes.
Cinnamon is a good staple in your pantry since you can use it in both sweet and savory dishes. It is such a versatile spice. With that being said, almost any dessert will have that pick-me-up effect the moment you sprinkle some cinnamon on it. Plus, it’s extremely useful outside cooking. It can be part of a potpourri, a moth repellent, or as a mouth freshener.
Cayenne pepper is made from pure, ground chilies. Don’t confuse Cayenne Pepper with Chili Powder, which actually happens to be a blend of spices (cayenne pepper, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, and oregano). Having cayenne pepper on hand allows you to readily add heat to your dishes. Be awate that you will only need just a few dashes to crank up the heat.
Paprika is perhaps one of the most popular spices in the world. Never run out of it, especially if you cook a lot of American, European or Mediterranean dishes! 🙂 From marinades to sauces, seasoning rubs, salsa, fillings, curry pastes, and condiments — paprika is there. So make sure you always have this unique spice on hand.
Finally, garlic powder is the last essential part of your basic spice rack. Garlic powder is made from dehydrated garlic that has been ground to make this spice convenient to use. Garlic Powder is an essential spice when you are making Indian, South American, Chinese, Mexican and Mediterranean recipes.
